Expression of Interest - The Big Takeover Filmmaker

The Big Takeover team are looking for a filmmaker to create two films to capture the entire Year of Young People 2018 Project.

The BIG Takeover is a new and exciting event for young people in Shetland to showcase a full programme of music, film, drama, sport and other cultural activities on a scale never done before. Young people are at the heart of the planning and organisation of the event and have a leading role in decision making. The various events will take place in Shetland’s main public buildings in Lerwick including Mareel, The Garrison Theatre, Islesburgh Community Centre, Shetland Library, Shetland Museum and Archives, Clickimin Leisure Complex and the Gilbertson Park, over the weekend of 14th, 15th and 16th of September 2018.

The Year of Young People 2018 main objectives are:

  • Provide a platform for young people to have their views heard and acted upon
  • Showcase the amazing talents of young people through events and media
  • Develop better understanding, co-operation and respect between generations
  • Recognise the impact of teachers, youth workers and other supporting adults on young people’s lives
  • Provide opportunities for young people to express themselves through culture, sport and other activities

One film should capture the excitement of the event, and should be 3 minutes long.  This will focus primarily on the Big Takeover event weekend, and show at least one event from each venue partner, as well as at least two vox pops from young people involved.

The second film should be between 15 - 20 minutes long, and take into account all stages of the project.  It will include longer clips of young people speaking, including interviews with the Year of Young People 2018 Ambassadors before and after the event, and more in depth coverage of the weekend in each of the venues.

Stages of the project:

  • Co-design element
  • Pre-event engagement
  • Delivery of the event on the ground

Groups to highlight:

  • Year of Young People 2018 Ambassadors
  • Venue Facilitation Groups
  • Performers
  • Young Volunteers
  • Visitors from outside Shetland (Orkney and Western Isles primarily)

Venues to capture:

  • Mareel
  • Garrison Theatre
  • Shetland Museum and Archives
  • Clickimin Centre
  • Gilbertson Park
  • Shetland Library
  • Islesburgh Community Centre

Both films must be of high quality in all aspects: visuals, audio and editing must all be professional standard.  Each film will include an end credits reel, provided by the Big Takeover stakeholders group, and include all appropriate logos and credits.

Shetland Arts Development Agency will make available four camera kits for the weekend, if required.  The filmmaker will be responsible for covering their own travel costs, any additional freelancers and any additional kit.  Any music licensing will need to be sought by the filmmaker and the filmmaker will be responsible for any licensing costs incurred.  The filmmaker will be responsible for their own public liability insurance and PVG checks.  We will help the filmmaker source young volunteers to assist over the weekend, and the filmmaker will be responsible for giving any volunteers the appropriate level of training before or during the weekend.

The fee offered is £2,500.

The final films would be delivered on or before Monday 15th October 2018.  We would expect the final films to be submitted in digital format, high definition and widescreen (16:9).

Individuals interested in this opportunity should email a CV, cover letter and at least two links to previous work to cara.mcdiarmid@shetlandarts.org by Friday 25th May 2018 at 5pm.
